It’s late September at the Capital City Public Market in Boise and Kurtis Williams of Waterwheel Gardens in Emmett says the vegetable season is beginning to wane.  But, he adds, his late season fruits and berries are coming on strong.

He’s got Flavor Top nectarines, Fortune plums, Dapple Dandy plumcots, pears, two kinds of peaches and lots of apples — all at their seasonal peak.

Speaking of apples, several magazines are devoting ink to that fall fruit this month. The October issue of Saveur has an article by Gary Paul Nabhan on preservationists bring back heirloom apples; Bon Appetit has several recipes including an apple and cheddar turnover with dried cranberries; and Gourmet is doing their take on the old-fashioned caramel apple.

Cool weather is on the way and it’s likely to feel like a short fall — but at least it can be a sweet one.
