An article at the New West website says fruit juice can be as nasty a pollutant as any industrial runoff. The Hood River Juice Company in Hood River, Oregon — which, according to it’s website, makes “organic and natural juice from Oregon and Washington apples and pears” — has been charged with numerous water pollution violations.
“Fruit juice” New West says “is highly acidic, and when not removed of properly can have harsh impacts on the environment. Oxygen levels in the water can be lowered. PH levels tend to zip up and down. Fish, particularly salmon, are extremely sensitive to these types of changes to the ecosystem.”
David Ryan, founder and CEO of Hood River Juice Company, has been charged by the State of Oregon with several felony and misdemeanor counts related to the illegal discharge of fruit juice and pulp into state waters.
