About Northwest Food News

nwf_pod_graphicNorthwest Food News explores the subject of food and agriculture in the inland Northwest — including subjects outside the Northwest that impact the region.

The site includes streaming audio and podcasts for the Boise State Public Radio shows “Edible Idaho,” “The Market & Garden Report,” regional restaurant reviews and  a new collaboration between the Boise Weekly and Boise State Public Radio called “2011: The Year of Idaho Food,” a grass-roots, year-long, statewide look at the surprising variety of foods grown in Idaho.

Northwest Food News also includes food writing from Boise Weekly staff, Guy Hand’s print and radio stories and contributions from Northwest writers and radio producers like Craig Goodwin in Spokane, Randy King in Boise, Laura McCandlish in Corvallis, Deena Prichep in Portland, Clay Scott in Helena and the Northwest News Network, a collaboration of public radio stations in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

Guy Hand is an award-winning independent radio producer/writer/photographer whose work has aired on Voice of America, Living On Earth, The New York Times (website), The Splendid Table, Radio High Country News, the Nature Stories Podcast, The Infinite Mind, The Northwest News Network and numerous regional NPR affiliates. His weekly series “Edible Idaho” airs on Boise State Public Radio and recently won three first place awards from the Idaho Press Club and a third place award from the Society of Professional Journalists.  And expanded print version of Edible Idaho shows runs in the Boise Weekly.  Hand has also written for The Los Angeles Times, Audubon, Sierra, Orion, Northern Lights, High Country News, The Idaho Statesman and other magazines, newspapers, and anthologies.

Hand is a member of the International Association of Food Professionals (IACP), the Association of Food Journalists (AFJ) and the American Cheese Society.

    Year of Idaho food is fascinating. I have always loved gardening and canning — preserving that wonderful fresh bit of summer for a gloomy winter afternoon. Every year I try one fun-goofy garden-thing that may not be appropriate to our zone, but is wildly appropriate to my curiosity. This year? An olive tree. It’s so cute I can’t stand it. What to do with the crop? A martini olive … or press for olive oil? I’m not heating up the pan yet, but it could happen.
